Fetteresso Choir plays a prominent role in the worship of our church. If you have been to our morning service you’ve probably noticed us – by eye and by ear – up in the choir loft. This is where you will find us on a Sunday morning. We meet there at 9.30am for a practice which continues until about 10.25 when we take time out for a coffee before the service starts. At this practice we primarily rehearse items for the morning service – both for that day and also for future services. Anthems, for example, take three or four weeks to prepare depending on how difficult they are and we usually sing one during the offertory at every morning service. Our repertoire last year featured music ranging from the traditional works by Mozart and Schubert to the modern melodic music of Joseph Martin, Tom Fettke and others.
The choir comprises some 20 singers with good representation of all four parts of the chorus – soprano, alto, tenor and bass. This enables us to present a good range of music from classical to modern day composers from both sides of the Atlantic.
Our annual Christmas concert attracts an audience of well over 200 and is our big event of the year outwith the morning services. In 2009 our choir was augmented by some guest singers to 23 people, and accompaniment was by keyboard and clarinet. This is the traditional event which kicks off the Christmas season in Fetteresso and for it the church is beautifully decorated and lit up by sparkling candles. In 2009 the concert programme featured music by American composers Joel Raney and Mark Hayes as well as the ever-popular John Rutter.
It is an unusual year when the choir does not take part in other musical entertainments which might be of a more formal nature (even a full Messiah production) or informal (musicals and other songs).
Versatility is therefore a key skill required of our choir members and we hope you enjoy our music both in and outwith the church.
