These sessions are designed for parents to use at home with their kids. They are aimed at Primary age children, but you can run the sessions however you like (expand on it, cut bits out - it's your home and your family, after all!) to make it more appropriate for any age group. To make things a little easier, anything in bold below is designed to be read aloud by a parent/adult/leader, and other stuff is intended to help direct as you lead and perhaps dig a bit deeper
Recap - Take a look at the following images, and see if you can remember the stories we've learned in the last four weeks.
(Palm Sunday - Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, cheered by crowds celebrating his arrival)
(Jesus is arrested, but still is in control, and still shows love and compassion to others)
(Jesus is crucified, and also forgives the thief on the cross)
(Jesus rose from the dead, and ate fish with his friends to prove he was really alive!)
We've come to the end of the Easter story, and we're going to hear today about a big goodbye, when Jesus left his friends. Watch the video:
Today's Bible passage comes from Luke 24: 50-53. The Good News Translation is below, or you can use a different translation if you like.
Then he led the disciples out of the city as far as Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them. As he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven. They worshiped him and went back into Jerusalem, filled with great joy, and spent all their time in the Temple giving thanks to God.
Make a disappearing Jesus! If you have any paper cups in the house, great! If not, you can make a paper cone by cutting out a large circle, and then making one cut from the outside to the centre of the circle. Overlap the two sides of this cut on top of each other, and the circle will become a cone.
You'll also need: Glue or tape; Cotton wool balls (optional); a piece of string; and a paper Jesus (draw and cut out a figure of a man small enough to fit inside your paper cup or cone, and colour him in as Jesus.
Glue or tape one end of the string to the back of Jesus. Stick the cotton wool around the outside of the paper cup or cone. If using a paper cup, carefully punch a hole in the bottom of the cup. Thread the other end of the string through either the hole in the cup or the tip of the cone, and tie a knot in the string to make sure it won't fall back out. Pull on the knotted end of the string, and you should see Jesus being taken up into the clouds!
Play a game of hide and seek!
Link: When you were playing the game, you couldn't see the person you were seeking, but you knew they were there. Jesus has gone to Heaven and left us the Holy Spirit. Just like in the game you just played, we can't see Him, but we can know He is there with us, always.
When Jesus left, he gave his followers instructions to tell everyone about him. Through the Holy Spirit living in them, they were able to change the world. The same can be true of us today!
Dear God, thank you for Jesus! Thank you that He came and lived a perfect life, and died on the cross so that we might be forgiven. Help us to know you and love you more each day, and help us to share your love and your truth to all. Amen.
